Great Yarmouth

Off the Coast
(to be exhibited with 'Great Yarmouth', 2008, Video)

They seemed to come from nowhere.
Bourne out of the foggy infinity of the sea
suddenly they appeared through the mist,
like white soldiers bravely marching
over the top of the horizon.

The turbines, turning slowly are marking
with each rotation the ticking of time.
Towards the moment when we must change,
when the energy that powers us is not
so easy to rely on.

'They are the future!' some cry,
embracing them as warriors
in this energy war we find ourselves fighting.

'They are ruining our landscapes' reply
those who see man-made structures
which rupture the tranquillity of an endless view.

Their revolutions reflect the rhythms of the sea,
but will these stationary flagpoles of a better future
collapse, disappear into the water and
leave us lost, searching for yet another answer?
