salt marsh
Filmed on in Titchwell, Norfolk after I became interested in the pillboxes that can be found scattered around the North Norfolk Coast. These structures no longer have a function, yet they have not yet been accepted as historical sites worth preserving. Instead they have been left to decay, and are gradually becoming a part of the natural landscape. At the same time, I began to read about the discovery of archaeological remains of Roman salt-making processes between the Titchwell and North Wotten. At one time hundreds of evaporation mounds were spread across the salt marshes, as salt was vital to the preservation of food; the landscape which is now so protected had an important practical use. This resulted in the video Salt Marsh, in which I enacted these elements of Titchwell's history simultaneously, thereby creating a sense of multiple histories occurring within one geographical site.
